I live in an apartment and we don’t have a yard, so it’s been tough to potty train my 4 month old puppy, the indoor potty pads just confused him, and it felt like we were really stuck when it came to potty training. Despite how fast he has already learned other basic obedience and tricks like, come, heel, sit, stay, down, shake etc etc.
I was getting desperate, and I knew the whole process of trying to catch him before he goes, put the harness and leash on, then walk all the way outside to the pet potty area in our complex was making things extra confusing for him. When potty training dogs in the past, I lived in homes with a fenced in yard, and if I saw they needed to go, I just opened the door and out they went. It never took more than a week to potty train, and I never used potty pads because I didn’t need to. So potty training in an apartment complex was a whole new ball game! And one I was not prepared for! I did tried the artificial grass patch for potty training, but I think it hurt his paws as he just seemed frustrated with it and just wanted to tear it to shreds, so that was a huge fail.
I spotted this bark box on amazon, and thought it perfect to put on our balcony, he was already used to going on bark out in the pet area outside, so I thought, okay, when introducing something new, provide something old. Puppy training 101 right?
It worked! It’s only been two days and we haven’t had any messes in the house. Today, I was busy doing chores and knew I couldn’t keep an eye on him, so I just kept the balcony door open today.
After some time, I thought, he usually goes potty right about now, I’ll bring him out and see if he has to go, then I saw it! He already went! While I was busy, he went outside to the balcony all by himself and used his little bark box and took himself out!
I am beyond thrilled! This is exactly what we needed to help him really figure out this potty training stuff.
Thank you for an amazing product! Beyond happy with this purchase!!

Mom dog will not use it at all no matter how many attempts
We did let a puppy try and they used it but not an older dog

I honestly cannot believe how amazingly well this product has worked for us. Our new puppy took to it immediately and within 48 hours, she was using it exclusively. Not a single accident since! We keep it in our unairconditioned master bathroom and I haven’t noticed any smell. The #1 is fully absorbed within an hour and the #2 sits on top of the plastic grate for easy pick up. We live in a high-rise apartment, and while we do have artificial turf on our balcony, with Bark Potty, our puppy can take herself out whenever she needs to go. Two thumbs way up!

We actually gave up on this and got a real grass patch as she likes eating cardboard and then she was trying to eat the webbing on top of the bark and trying to eat the bark so we quit trying to use it quickly. Also the cardboard got soaking wet because it was the outside. I still have it. I’ve kept it in case of emergency.., she also got diarrhea at one point which was an absolute nightmare to try and clean off the bark ! I certainly understood the attraction of PP pads

I really hate to leave a bad review but this has turned out to be such a waste of money and such a disappointment. It’s a great idea in theory but my dog could not figure it out. It smells like the dirt outside so she likes to sit on it and her claws keep getting caught in it. I looked at them and they aren’t curled or even really that long and she keeps getting stuck and tripping on it. I used the entire bottle of pee spray and it didn’t make a difference. This was a bit of a splurge for me and I was very excited but unfortunately I will probably have to just throw it away.

When we were only four days in, I thought this was great for my German Shepherd/Husky Mix. Supposedly replaces 60 pee pads, which is about 3 weeks worth for us, and the price of this vs pee pads is relatively comparable. I used towels and washable pee pads for 2 months but really wanted the convenience of not having to touch and clean them constantly, but not have to keep buying pee pads, either.
This worked great! But only for four days. I used the baggies to pick up poop, and there is much less smell than before! When poop sits on a pee pad or towel along with urine, it makes a lingering smell of mixed up urine and poop, in addition to just the poop. Here, I have only the poop smell until I clean it up! No ucky mixed smell, no urine odor. It had been awesome.
Then came day 5, and the smell of urine. By day 6, strong odor. Today is day 7 and I need to get it out of here!
So in my home, with one large dog using it and at least a couple of cats pooping there so presumably peeing as well, it does not last even a week. When I bought it, I thought I paid $35 which was pretty good if it really replaced 60 pee pads, but when I looked back at it the price is now $50. $50 per week is waaaaaaay too pricey. I can’t buy this every week.
I have 5 cats, and I’m not sure who, but some combo of them use it, too. Fine by me! I’m going to buy the smaller version for them, so they can have their own to replace one of the litter boxes. The scratching has yet to tear the netting or make a barky mess. So they’ll still get one accessible to only them, and it’ll be interesting to see how long it lasts.
Loose stool that plops like melted soft serve ice cream worried me a bit, because for some reason our big boy goes between squishy plops and firm poop in the same day nearly every day (maybe every day). But I just pick it up with the bag, use toilet paper to scrape up what remains, and amazingly the residue seems to not be noticeable by sight or smell afterward. Nice!
The included baggies are a bit difficult to access initially. I used the handle of a butter knife to bust the cardboard cover, then fished out the bags with the blade. I love how they’re included and are right out of the edge there, but they only lasted until day 3.
I really hoped this would last 3 weeks! This dog urinated a lot. It did not even last a whole week before needing to be replaced, which is very disappointing.
Suggestions:
1) Ease up the bag accessibility
2) Lengthen the box, like as long as a towel. It does not need to be wider, but an extra 6 inchex wide wouldn’t hurt though am extra 12 or 18 inches long would really be ideal; if twice as long, then the large dogs will have more surface area to pee, than pretty much just the center.
I wish there was a smaller one, like the size of a litter box, not only so this would pretty much fit in a litter box but also so it could fit on the floor of the car for travel, in a carrier, and in a small area for a small dog. I have a small bratsky dog that insists on peeing in the kitchen and how awesome if there was one maybe 15×15 or 20 inches to place there.
If the netting was metal, this would work well for a rabbit.
I am going to try a real grass potty spot next, then write a comparison. If this bark potty had lasted longer (minimum two weeks instead of less than one week) and if the real grass worked out well, too, I would have just bought one of each set them end to end, with a gap in between so my big boy does not pee where they touch. Instead, I think I’ll make my own bark potty that I dump every few days, and see if perhaps that is economical. I’ll keep you posted!

Long lasting, clean and odorless option. I’ll continue replacing it!
